History

In 1934, the Propeller Club of Providence was originally chartered. Records indicate that the club was active for only a few years, folding sometime in the 40's. In 1966, John Lynch was the driving force to re-establish the club and in 1976, the club was renamed Port of Narragansett Bay to reflect more accurately the multi-port makeup of the membership. On May 23, 1975 the club admitted the first women (3) under a request from the National Group representing female Propeller Clubs. It has had an energetic leadership and has maintained about 100 members, plus or minus, during these last 28 years. Today our local chapter is made up of many related maritime industries such as pilots, barge & towboat operators, shipyard & terminal operators, ship agents, marine surveyors & lawyers, environmental clean up specialists, as well as retired members who wish to keep their hands in the marine industry. The club meets monthly, September to June.
